I’ve already mentioned that Ulua Beach in Wailea is one of my favorite all-around beaches in South Maui. While I love it during the day, Ulua Beach at sunset is my absolute favorite. The grassy lava point with palm trees and the large lava rocks scattered in the sand make for gorgeous and interesting sunset pictures.
Bring some beach appetizers (my favorite is ahi poke with a cold bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Island Gourmet Markets at the Shops of Wailea) and some chairs and be prepared for a memorable Maui sunset.
SECRET: If you haven’t gotten enough of the water that day (or you just arrived that afternoon), bring a towel and a float and enjoy the view from the water! Once you get in, it feels colder outside.
Once the sun goes down, rinse the sand from your feet at the showers, drop off your stuff in your car and proceed south (left when looking at the ocean) along the beach path for a romantic stroll as far as you like (the path goes on forever until Fairmont Kea Lani). My kids love this walk a well. If you have little ones, be sure to bring a stroller in case they get tired on the walk back (and it’s close to bedtime + time change).
The Marriott is just around the corner and has a beachfront bar with oversized games for kids and adults to enjoy. A little further you might catch a view of a luau and you definitely will know you are in Maui when the tiki torches are lit.
If you are looking for a longer walk and want to check out the Grand Wailea, you can cut through it and walk back to the Shops of Wailea (we usually take some random way up some stairs through the parking garage; this route is not stroller friendly) for window shopping and maybe an ice cream cone if you ate enough on the beach. Finish your loop accessing your car from Wailea Alanui.
Still hungry? Consider Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman (yes, same owner as Merriman’s in Kapalua) just up the street.
Ahhh…my perfect Maui evening.
