Kapalua Bay

Beachwalk along Kapalua Bay

Kapalua Beach might just be my favorite beach in all of Maui. White, perfect sand. Calm, clear water. Bathrooms. Kayak rentals. And some trees on the north end for natural shade. A turtle often comes in pretty shallow at Kapalua, so that’s fun for kids (and adults) to check out. Unfortunately, parking is limited, rain showers frequently blow through in the afternoon and its a bit of a drive from most resort areas in Maui. However, if you get there early enough, you might be rewarded with the beach to yourself (because there isn’t a ton of parking it never gets too crowded).

SECRET: If you arrive at Kapalua too late in the morning to find a parking space, consider coming back just before sunset. The day users will all be packing up to go home and you can hopefully score a parking lot spot for the big show.

White sand for the castle and a plumeria for the flag

When we are lucky enough to find parking during the day, we make the long(ish) trek along the beachfront path to the far north side of the beach. Yes, it’s farther from the bathrooms, but we enjoy having shade from the trees for the little guys and the snorkeling on that side of the cove is better. It’s also usually quieter because most people are…well, lazy.

Floating with a mocktail in hand at sunset is the perfect ending to a perfect day

Golden hour at Kapalua Bay

Kapalua is a popular spot for people to get married or renew their vows and many have their reception at Merriman’s on the point. At sunset, you might find two or three happy couples at the same time taking pictures (there is plenty of gorgeous scenery to go around). The photographers are really good about shooting around people enjoying the beach, but we try and keep the kids from running into the background while they enjoy the precious few “golden hour” minutes right at sunset. When we stay in West Maui, Kapalua Bay is one of our favorite places to watch the sunset. Ulua Beach is our favorite South Maui sunset spot.
